Fka Twigs became well known internationally when Twilight actor Robert Pattinson unveiled her as his new love. For the Twilight fans,hoping for the reunion of Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, were outraged and she faced the hateful attacks from them. This caught the attention of many people. After watching her music videos and live shows, some people started to wonder how did Pattison managed to bag such a brilliant woman.
Fka Twigs (Tahliah Debrett Barnett) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,UK. She was working as a backup dancer at the age of 17 and even appeared in Jesse J’s Price Tag Music Video. However, she felt being a backup dancer was not doing much for her creativity and became a singer. Her music has been described as gender-bending. This is because her music is a mix of electronic, trip hop, advent-garde and such.
Not only she writes her own songs but she also takes part in directing her music videos. You can see her wonderful creation in the music videos such as “Glass & Patron” and “”M3LL155X”. Fka Twigs presents her art in her dressing to the superb level. It came to the point that some critics were worried she would be all fashion and no action before hearing her music. Their fears were unfounded.
Her fashion style has been described as avant-pop. Her stylist Karen Clarkson told Dazed Magazine,” “People’s perception of her is that she’s really out there or really wacky. But actually twigs is really refined and very elegant. She likes clothes to be very beautiful and to be kind of couture to her body. It’s avant-garde but never feels costume-y – it always feels elegant.”
Fka Twigs’s mother also helps out in creating her stage designs as well. Since her style of dancing,voguing, requires a lot of movement that her clothes need to be like a second skin. That is why she cannot wear clothes that are beautiful but not easy to move. Her fashionable costumes can only be made by those who truly understand the design and structure concept of clothes making. As a UK citizen, she is also very supportive of homegrown talents by wearing clothes from London fashion designers. Her fashion influence could be seen in collections by big brands such as Givenchy. Her gelled baby hair inspired many fashion lookbooks and runways. This is the reason why she was awarded British Style- Fashion Innovator at British Fashion Awards 2015.
