A TASTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA 🍜🌏

written by Thi August 24, 2026
A TASTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA 🍜🌏

A TASTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA 🍜🌏

Four countries, distinctive flavours, and the foods that make rainy days feel a little warmer.

Southeast Asia has a way of making food feel like part of the atmosphere. The fragrance of lemongrass in the air, coconut simmering into a rich broth, fresh herbs scattered over noodles, chilli adding just enough heat — these are flavours that are closely tied to place, culture and everyday life.

Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam may sit within the same region, but their food cultures each have a distinct personality. Some are rich and creamy, some bright and fresh, some spicy and aromatic, while others are built around slow-cooked broths and delicate herbs.

For LUSH TASTE, we take a closer look at four countries and four different expressions of Southeast Asian comfort food – from familiar favourites to regional specialties worth discovering.

🇲🇲 MYANMAR

A TASTE OF HOME

Myanmar food is warm, generous and full of character. From bustling morning markets to family kitchens and little tea shops, food is woven into everyday life. Its flavours have been shaped by Myanmar’s many regions and communities, creating a cuisine that feels both diverse and deeply familiar.

There is something particularly comforting about Burmese food. The flavours can be savoury, earthy, creamy, slightly sweet or beautifully aromatic – often with fresh herbs, chilli, garlic and crunchy toppings adding another layer.

🇲🇲 MYANMAR A Taste of Home

MOHINGA

If there is one food that instantly speaks of Myanmar, it is Mohinga.

Rice noodles are served with a fragrant fish-based broth, traditionally enriched with ingredients such as banana stem, chickpea flour and aromatic herbs and spices. It is often enjoyed in the morning, but its appeal goes far beyond breakfast.

Warm, comforting and full of flavour, Mohinga is one of those foods that feels unmistakably Burmese.

OHN NO KHAO SWE

Creamy, coconut-rich and deeply comforting, Ohn No Khao Swe brings together noodles, chicken and aromatic spices in a silky broth.

The richness of coconut milk gives the dish its signature character, while chilli, lime and crunchy toppings can add brightness and texture.

And when the rain starts falling, အုန်းနို့ခေါက်ဆွဲ ပူပူနွေးနွေးတစ်ပွဲ feels like the perfect kind of comfort.

SHAN KHAO SWE

From Myanmar’s Shan State comes Shan Khao Swe, a noodle dish with a more rustic and savoury personality.

Noodles are paired with meat, tomato, garlic and fresh toppings, creating layers of flavour without making the dish feel heavy. It is a beautiful example of how regional food adds to the richness of Myanmar’s culinary identity.

TOFU NWAY

Soft, warm and silky, Tofu Nway is a Shan specialty that offers a completely different texture from the noodle dishes above.

Warm tofu is combined with savoury toppings, herbs and other accompaniments, creating something simple yet incredibly satisfying.

It is proof that comfort food does not always need to be complicated.

MYANMAR IN FOUR TASTES

From the familiar warmth of Mohinga to the creamy richness of Ohn No Khao Swe and the regional character of Shan cuisine, Myanmar food is ultimately about comfort, generosity and familiarity.

🇹🇭 THAILAND

THE ART OF BALANCE

Thai cuisine is often associated with bold flavours, but there is much more to it than heat.

Many Thai foods have a gentle sweetness and a distinctive fragrance, with coconut milk, palm sugar, herbs and aromatic spices creating depth. Sour lime, salty seasonings and chilli are then brought in to create contrast.

Thai food is not simply about being spicy ‘ it is about how different flavours come together.

From creamy noodle dishes to familiar street-food favourites, Thai cuisine has a distinctive way of making sweet, savoury, sour and aromatic flavours work beautifully together.

Khao Soi

A signature of Northern Thailand, Khao Soi combines noodles with a rich coconut curry broth and aromatic spices. Creamy, fragrant and gently spicy, it is the kind of dish that feels especially satisfying on a rainy day.

The contrast between the noodles, curry and toppings gives every mouthful a little something different.

Pad Thai

Pad Thai needs little introduction. Rice noodles are stir-fried with tamarind, egg, vegetables and peanuts to create that familiar combination of sweet, savoury and slightly tangy flavours.

From street-food stalls to restaurants around the world, Pad Thai has become one of Thailand’s most recognisable culinary exports.

Boat Noodles

Small in size but intense in flavour, Boat Noodles are traditionally served in a deeply seasoned, dark broth with noodles, meat and herbs.

The appeal is in the concentration of flavour ‘ rich, savoury and aromatic, with every ingredient working together.

Tom Kha Gai

Creamy coconut soup meets galangal, lemongrass, lime, herbs and chicken. Tom Kha Gai manages to feel rich and refreshing at the same time, with the acidity of lime balancing the creaminess of coconut milk.

Thailand brings the heat, the fragrance and the fun.

🇲🇾 MALAYSIA

A Melting Pot of Flavours

Malaysia’s food culture tells a story of movement, migration and cultural exchange.

Malay, Chinese, Indian and regional traditions have all contributed to the country’s incredibly diverse culinary landscape. Noodles, coconut milk, seafood, spices, herbs and sauces appear again and again ‘ but rarely in quite the same way.

The result is food that feels layered, colourful and full of character.

🇲🇾 MALAYSIA A MELTING POT OF FLAVOUR

CURRY LAKSA

Rich coconut curry, noodles, seafood, tofu puffs and aromatic spices come together in Curry Laksa.

Creamy, fragrant and full of depth, it is one of those dishes where the aroma arrives before the first bite.

The coconut brings richness while spices and chilli add warmth and character.

 ASSAM LAKSA

Assam Laksa takes the laksa experience in a completely different direction.

Tamarind gives the broth its distinctive sourness, while fish, herbs and rice noodles create a combination that is fresh, tangy and savoury.

Bright and punchy, it is a reminder that Malaysian food does not shy away from contrast.

 CHAR KWAY TEOW

Flat rice noodles cooked over high heat create the unmistakable smoky character of Char Kway Teow.

Usually paired with seafood, egg, soy sauce and other ingredients, the dish is simple in appearance but relies heavily on the technique and heat of the wok.

It is street food with a wonderfully bold personality.

 MEE GORENG MAMAK

Yellow noodles are tossed with vegetables, egg, spices and savoury-sweet sauces to create Mee Goreng Mamak.

Colourful, hearty and full of texture, it reflects the multicultural character of Malaysian food culture.

Every bite brings something different ‘sweet, savoury, spicy and aromatic.

MALAYSIA IN FOUR TASTES

Malaysia shows how different culinary traditions can meet, influence one another and create something entirely their own.

From rich laksa to smoky noodles, Malaysian cuisine is a celebration of diversity on the plate.

🇻🇳 VIETNAM

Fresh, Fragrant & Beautifully Balanced

Vietnamese cuisine has a natural sense of balance. Fresh herbs, aromatic broths, rice noodles, vegetables and carefully layered flavours create food that can feel both comforting and refreshing.

🇻🇳 VIETNAM
Fresh, Fragrant & Beautifully Balanced

PHỞ

Vietnam’s most iconic noodle soup is all about the broth.

Rice noodles are paired with beef or chicken, fresh herbs and aromatic spices, creating a bowl that feels simple but takes patience and technique to prepare.

Warm, fragrant and delicate, Phở has become a global favourite while remaining deeply connected to Vietnamese food culture.

BÚN BÒ HUẾ

From the historic city of Huế comes Bún Bò Huế, a more intense and aromatic noodle soup.

Beef, lemongrass and chilli create a broth with depth and warmth, giving it a bolder personality than the delicate character often associated with Phở.

It is spicy, fragrant and deeply regional.

BÚN THỊT NƯỚNG

Fresh rice vermicelli is topped with grilled pork, herbs, vegetables and a sweet-savoury dressing in Bún Thịt Nướng.

The smoky grilled meat contrasts beautifully with fresh herbs and cool noodles, making the dish colourful, refreshing and full of texture.

It is Vietnamese food at its most vibrant.

MÌ QUẢNG

A speciality from Central Vietnam, Mì Quảng combines turmeric-tinted noodles with meat or seafood, herbs, peanuts and a small amount of rich broth.

Unlike a traditional noodle soup, the broth is used more sparingly, allowing the noodles- toppings and herbs to share the spotlight.

The result is a dish built around texture, colour and contrast.

VIETNAM IN FOUR TASTES

Vietnamese cuisine shows that comfort food can also be fresh, light and beautifully balanced.

From the familiar warmth of Phở to the bold character of Bún Bò Huế, Vietnamese cuisine offers a different way of experiencing comfort.

🌧️ WHEN THE RAIN COMES, FOLLOW THE FLAVOUR

Perhaps the best thing about rainy season is having an excuse to crave something warm.

A steaming bowl of coconut noodles. A fragrant curry. A rich broth filled with herbs and spices. Something sweet and savoury, something bright with lime, or something spicy enough to wake up the senses.

From Myanmar’s comforting familiarity to Thailand’s fragrant balance, Malaysia’s multicultural richness and Vietnam’s fresh flavours, Southeast Asia offers endless ways to enjoy the season.

Four countries. Different traditions. Different flavours.

But each one tells us something about the people and places behind the food.

So, when the rain starts falling ‘ what are you craving?

Mohinga, Khao Soi, Laksa, Phở – or something completely new? 🍜

This rainy season, let your appetite travel.
