The recent coronavirus lockdown has led to a spike in esports participation, especially when it comes to motorsports. For those of us who may never get a chance to drive a lap around a real racetrack, a simulator is the next best thing. Here’s what you need to build one.
PC
First off, you’ll need a decent PC. Check the minimum requirements of the game first. An Intel 15-9600k and an Nvidia GTX 1660Ti are a good entry-level CPU/GPU pair. If you can afford to spend a little more, go for an Intel Core i9-9900k and an Nvidia RTX2080Ti. 16GB of RAM should be more than enough to handle most games.
Wheels and pedals
Logitech G29/G920 is one of the most popular and affordable racing wheels in the market. Brands such as Thrustmaster and Fanatec offer more expensive options but the G29 does the trick for a decent price.
Monitor
Some sim racers opt for the multi-monitor setup, while others may go for a single monitor. It all comes down to preference. Gaming monitors offer great refresh rates, reducing input lag so make sure to check your monitor’s rate.
Table and chair
Most entry-level gaming wheels include clamps to attach to tables. But if you’re looking for something more professional, companies like Playseat, GTR, and DXRacer sell racing frames, complete with seat and shifter stands. Again, it all comes down to how much you’re willing to spend.
