Not so sincere form of flattery

တေန႔က အဖြားက ေဝလရဲ႕ “ခင္ေလး စိမ္းတယ္” သီခ်င္းကိုလာ ဖြင့္ျပၿပီ အဂၤလိပ္ original ႐ွာေပးပါလို႔ ေျပာတယ္။ ေဝလ က ကိုယ္ပိုင္သံစင္ ဆိုတာလို႔ေျပာေတာ့ သိပ္မယံုခ်င္ဘူး။ ေျပာရမယ္ ဆိုရင္လည္း ျမန္မာျပည္မွာႏိုင္ငံျခားသီခ်င္းေတြကို ဘာသာျပန္ၿပီး ျပန္ဆိုေနၾက
တာ ႏွစ္နဲ႔ ခ်ီေနၿပီေလ။ ဘာလို႔ ဒီလို ျဖစ္တာလည္း ဆိုတာကိုေတာ့ သမိုင္းစဥ္ကိုေသခ်ာမေလ့လာရေသးေတာ့ မေဝဖန္ေတာ့ ပါဘူး။ ဒါေပမယ့္ ျမန္မာသီခ်င္းေလးတစ္ခု ေကာင္းရင္ ႏိုင္ငံျခားက သီခ်င္းoriginal ရိွလိမ့္မယ္ ဆိုတဲ့ အေတြးဝင္မိတာကိုေတာ့ စိတ္မေကာင္းစြာဝင္ခံရမွာပဲ။
Copyright issue က social media အရမ္းသံုးလာတဲ့ ျမန္မာျပည္မွာ မၾကာခနေပၚလာတဲ့ topic တစ္ခုပါ။ ဥပေဒ အရ သဲသဲကြဲကြဲ မရိွေတာ့ public က ပဲ လက္ရိွဆံုးျဖတ္ေနၾကပါတယ္။ ”ဒါမ်ိဳးက လူတိုင္းဆြဲတတ္တာပဲ” “ႏိုင္ငံျခားက အတိုင္းလိုက္လုပ္ႏိုင္တာ ဂုဏ္ယူရဦးမယ္” ဆိုတဲ့ အေျပာအဆိုေလးေတြ လည္းေတြ႔ေနရပါတယ္။ ဒီ article ထဲ မွာေတာ့ လူထုအစား ဖန္တီးသူေတြကိုပဲ ဦးတည္ၿပီးေျပာခ်င္ပါတယ္။
အခုတေလာမွာ လူခ်စ္လူခင္မ်ားတဲ့ အႏုပညာ႐ွင္တစ္ခ်ိဳ႕ ႏိုင္ငံျခားက အႏုပညာ႐ွင္ေတြကို ကူယူတယ ္ဆိုၿပီး အျငင္းပြားမႈေတြျဖစ္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ အက်ႌ ဒီဇိုင္းတူတာ cover ဒီဇိုင္းတူတာမ်ိဳးေလးေတြမ်ိဳးေပါ့။ ပရိသတ္ေတြကေတာ့ သူတို႔ခ်စ္တဲ့အႏုပညာ႐ွင္ေတြကို ကာကြယ္ေပး ၾကမွာပါ။ ဒါေပမယ့္ အခုလိုအျပင္ေလာကနဲ႔ မေဝးကြာေတာ့တဲ့ျမန္မာျပည္ အတြက္ အခုလိုကူးခ်တာက အလြန္ ႐ွက္စရာေကာင္းပါတယ္။ အျပည္ျပည္ဆိုင္ရာမွာ ရင္ေမာင္တန္းေနေအာင္လုပ္ေဆာင္ေနတဲ့ ျမန္မာျပည္မွာ အရင္ကနဲ႔ မတူပဲ တျခားႏိုင္ငံေတြကပါ ၾကည့္ေနၾကတာပါ။
Creator တစ္ေယာက္အေနနဲ႔ ကိုယ္ကကူးခ်လိုက္ၿပီး ကိုယ့္ပရိသတ္က “သူဒီလိုႏိုင္ငံျခားအတိုင္း ကူးႏိုင္တာ ဂုဏ္ယူရမယ္”လို႔ေျပာတာ သင့္ ကိုယ္ပိုင္ဖန္တီးမႈနဲ႔ ဘယ္ေတာ့မွ ႏိုင္ငံျခားမွာ ၿပိဳင္ႏိုင္မွာ မဟုတ္ဘူးလို႔ အဓိပၸါယ္ေကာက္ရေတာ့မလား။
Inspirations ေတြကေတာ့ ေနရာတိုင္းမွာ ရႏိုင္ၿပီး တစ္ခါတစ္ေလက်ရင္တူႏိုင္ပါတယ္။ ဥပမာ ေျပာရရင္ ကာတြန္း ေၾကာင္ေတြျဖစ္တဲ့ Garfield နဲ႔ Healthcliff တို႔ပါ။ ႏွစ္ေကာင္လံုးက လိေမၼာ္ေရာင္ေတြျဖစ္ေနၿပီး ဂ်စ္တစ္တစ္ေလးေတြပါ။ ဖန္တီးခဲ့တဲ့ အခ်ိန္ေတြေ တာင္နည္းနည္းတူတယ္။ ဒါေပမယ့္ တစ္ခုက US က ျဖစ္ၿပီးေနာက္တစ္ခု က UK ကပါ။ ဖန္တီးသူေတြကလည္း တစ္ျခားသူရဲ႕ ဖန္တီးပံုကိုတစ္ခါမွ မျမင္ခဲ့ဖူးဘူး။ ေျပာခ်င္
တာကေတာ့ တစ္ခါတစ္ေလ idea ေတြတူတက္ပါတယ္။ ပန္းခ်ီသင္တန္းတတ္ဖူးတဲ့ လူေတြ သိပါလိမ့္ မယ္။ အရာဝထၳဳတစ္ခု ကို အတူတူထိုင္ဆြဲေတာင္ လံုးဝပံုတူမထြက္လာဘူးဆိုတာ။
တစ္ခါတစ္ေလ အလုပ္အပ္တဲ့သူက ပံုတူကူခိုင္းမယ့္ အခ်ိန္ေတြရိွလိမ့္မယ္။ ဒါကေတာ့ ဖန္တီးရတဲ့

ကူးယူၿပီး ကိုယ့္ဖန္တီးထားတာလို႔ credit ယူတာေတာ့ ေတာ္ေတာ္ဆိုးပါတယ္။ ပထမ အခ်က္က ကူးခ်ခံရတဲ့လူကို ေစာ္ကားတာပါ။ ဒုတိယအခ်က္က ကိုယ့္ကိုအားေပးတဲ့ပရိသတ္ကို ေစာ္ကားတာပါ။ ျမန္မာျပည္ကလူေတြ ျဖစ္ေနလို႔ ေက်ာက္ေခတ္လူသားေတြလိုျဖစ္ေနၿပီး ႏိုင္ငံျခားက ကူးခ်ထားတာကိုမသိႏိုင္ဘူးလို႔ ဆိုလိုခ်င္တာလား? ျမန္မာျပည္က ပန္းခ်ီဆရာတစ္ေယာက္ရဲ႕ ပန္းခ်ီးကားေတြက အာ႐ွက တျခား ပန္းခ်ီဆရာေတြလိုက္ပံုတူကူးၾကပါတယ္။ ဒါ့ေၾကာင့္ “ႏိုင္ငံျခားက အတိုင္းလုပ္ႏိုင္တာ ဂုဏ္မယူရဘူးလား” ဆိုရင္ ” ႏိုင္ငံျခားကကိုယ့္ကိုလိုက္အတုယူေနတာက ပိုေကာင္းပါတယ္” လို႔ေျပာခ်င္ပါတယ္။
သင္ဟာ creator တစ္ေယာက္ဆိုရင္ ကိုယ့္ရဲ႕ သိမ္ငယ္စိတ္ကိုေဖ်ာက္ၿပီး ကိုယ္ပိုင္ဖန္တီးမႈကိုလုပ္ပါ။ ဒီႏိုင္ငံသားေတြကလည္း အားေပးေနမွာပါ။

My grandmother came to me the other day and asked if I could find the original version of Wai La’s “ Khin Lay Sein Dal”. I told her it is the original song. She was not very convinced. To be fair, most of the songs here are copied and sang back in Burmese version for years and years. Since thoroughly research on why this was practiced hasn’t be made by myself, I will not be giving my thoughts into it. However, it is rather sad when we start to think it must be a copy whenever we hear a nice Burmese song.
Copyright issue is the recurring topic in Myanmar social media. There is no concrete law on copyright yet so that most are decided by the public. We have been seeing remarks such as “But everyone can draw this!” and “We should be proud that we can imitate exactly like in International people”. In this article, I would like to appeal to the creators instead of the public.
There have been big cases here where beloved celebrities are accused of blatantly copying from oversea artists. This could just be a simple dress to even an album cover. The public, due to the love for their idols, will turn blind eyes to the supposed crimes. Yet it is deeply embarrassing for our country which is no longer shut off from the outside world. We have been competing internationally in many sectors and we are now exposed to the rest of the world. If you are the creator and you are caught from copying from other people, your fans may defend you by saying “Shouldn’t we be proud that we can imitate them so well?” Does that mean you will never amount to be able to compete internationally with your original work?
Inspirations are everywhere and sometimes, they can be the same. An example will be the cartoon “Garfield” and “Heathcliff’. Both are equally sassy, ginger cats and even looked similar. One was created in US and another from UK and their creation timeline was even similar. However, their respective artists had never seen each other’s works beforehand. I am arguing here that it is possible to have exact idea sometimes. However, any art student in the drawing class knows that you can be drawing the same thing and different works come out.
It can be difficult sometimes when your client may want you to copy exactly from someone else’s. It is the battle you will have to face in creative world and everyone has a bill to pay and the choice is yours. However, it seems rather malicious as a creator to rip off someone else’s work and take credit for yourself. First of all, you are disrespecting the person you stole from. Second, you are disrespecting your fans and your fellow countrymen. Is it because we are Burmese that we will not find out that you rip off from oversea artists? Are we cavemen that you could trick us easily? We have an artist in Myanmar whose works have been copied even from other part of Asia. So to the question “Shouldn’t we be proud that we could imitate so well?”, the answer would be, “No. It is better that we are imitated.”
If you are the creator, scratch off your inferiority complex and produce your original work. We are proud of our fellow countryman’s original work. Not the copy of someone else’s.
