The origins of Christmas food

Season’s Greetings from LUSH! December is the month of Christmas and holiday seasons. For this month’s Eat section, we are featuring the origins of traditional Christmas food. Even in countries without long Christian traditions, Christmas is heavily influenced by popular culture and many people are aware of roasted Turkey and Chestnuts as Christmas food. Let’s give you a low down on some of the iconic Christmas food.

LUSH ကေန ႏႈတ္ခြန္းဆက္သလိုက္ပါတယ္။ ဒီဇင္ဘာလေလးမွာဆိုရင္ ခရစၥၥမတ္ပိတ္ရက္နဲ႔ တျခား ပိတ္ရက္ေတြရွိတာ သိတယ္ဟုတ္။ ဒီလရဲ႕ Eat က႑ကေန ခရစၥၥမတ္ရိုုးရာအစားအစာေတြကို ေဖာ္ျပေပးလိုက္ပါတယ္။ ခရစ္ယာန္ယဥ္ေက်းမႈ မထြန္းကားတဲ႔ နိုင္ငံေတြမွာေတာင္မွခရစၥၥမတ္ပြဲကေတာ့ လူသိမ်ားတဲ႔ ပြဲတစ္ခုျဖစ္ျပီး ၾကက္ဆင္သားကင္နဲ႔ သစ္အယ္သီးတို႕ကို ခရစၥၥမတ္ရိုးရာအစားအစာ တစ္ခုအေနနဲ႔ လူအမ်ားစားသံုးေနၾကတာပဲျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ခရစၥၥမတ္ပြဲရဲ႕ အစားအစာေတြအေၾကာင္း ေလ့လာၾကည့္လိုက္ရေအာင္ေနာ္။

The Turkey

Although the roasted turkey is the main dish for Christmas dinner, it traditionally used to be beef, goose or even rabbit. Legend has it that Turkey became popular when Queen Victoria started eating it for Christmas. Nowadays, Turkey is the top choice for Christmas dinner and considered the most popular festive meat.

ၾကက္ဆင္သား

ၾကက္ဆင္သားကင္ဟာဆိုရင္ ဒီေန႕ေခတ္ ခရစၥမတ္ညစာစားပြဲရဲ႕ အဓိက ဟင္းလ်ာ ျဖစ္ေနေပမယ့္ အရင္တုန္းကေတာ့ အမဲသား ၊ ဘဲသား နဲ႔ ယုန္သားေတြကို အဓိက စားသံုးခဲ႔ၾကတာပါ။ ၀ိတိုရိယဘုရင္မၾကီးက စျပီး ခရစၥမတ္ညစာပြဲမွာ ၾကက္ဆင္သား စားသံုးရာကေန ၾကက္ဆင္သားက လူသိမ်ားလာတာပဲ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဒီေန႔အခ်ိန္မွာေတာ့ ၾကက္ဆင္သားက ခရစၥမတ္ညစာစားပြဲရဲ႕ အဓိကဟင္းလ်ာပြဲျဖစ္သလို ပြဲရဲ႕ လူသိအမ်ားဆံုး အသားလည္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

Christmas Ham

Ham is featured mainly in Christmas menus all around the world. It started from the wealthy citizens of Tudor England using a boar’s head for their holiday meal to honor Freyer, a Norse God of Harvest and fertility, while the lesser citizen used Yule ham.

၀က္ေပါင္ေျခာက္

၀က္ေပါင္ေျခာက္ကေတာ့ တစ္ကမၻာလံုးက ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ေတြရဲ႕ အစားအေသာက္စာရင္းထဲမွာ မပါမျဖစ္ပဲေနာ္။ Tudor အဂၤလန္မွာ ရွိတဲ့ ခ်မ္းသာတဲ႔ ျပည္သူေတြကေန Freyer ကို ဂုဏ္ျပဳတဲ႔အေနနဲ႔ ၀က္သိုးသားေခါင္းကို စတင္ စားသံုးရာကေန စတင္ခဲ႔တယ္လို႔ ဆိုရမွာပါ။ က်န္တဲ႔ ပံုမွန္လူေတြကေတာ့ ၀က္ေပါင္ေျခာက္ကိုပဲ စားသံုးခဲ႔ၾကတာပါ။

Christmas Pudding

According to tradition, family members took turns to stir the pudding from East to West in honor of the three wise men. Christmas pudding is made up of 13 ingredients to represent Christ and his twelve apostles. People used to hide a silver coin(six pence) inside the Christmas pudding and the person lucky enough to find it will get good fortune.

ခရစၥမတ္ပူတင္း

အစဥ္အလာအရေတာ့ မိသားစု၀င္ေတြက ခရစၥမတ္ပူတင္းျပဳလုပ္ရာမွာ ပညာရွိသံုးဦးကို ဂုဏ္ျပဳတဲ႔အေနနဲ႔ အေရွ႕ဘက္ကေနမွ အေနာက္ဘက္ကို ေသခ်ာေမႊေပးရတာပါ။ ခရစ္ေတာ္နဲ႔ သူ႕ရဲ႕တမန္ေတာ္ (၁၂) ဦး ကို ကိုယ္စားျပဳျပီး ပူတင္းကို ပါ၀င္ပစၥည္း (၁၃) မ်ိဳးနဲ႔ ျပဳလုပ္ရပါတယ္။ ပူတင္းတစ္လံုးထဲမွာ (၆) ပဲနိတန္ အေၾကြေစ႔တစ္ေစ႔ မွဳပ္ထည့္ထားျပီး အဲဒီ႔ပူတင္းကို ရရွိတဲ႔သူက ေရွ႕ဆက္ရမယ့္ ဘ၀ခရီးလမ္းမွာ ကံေကာင္းျခင္းေတြရရွိလိမ့္မယ္လို႔ အယူရွိၾကပါတယ္။

Fruitcake

The origin of this cake filled with fruits and occasional booze stems from middle Ages. Since sugar and dried fruits were expensive, this cake was only made on very special occasions such as Weddings and Christmas.

သစ္သီးကိတ္

ဒီ သစ္သီးကိတ္ကိုေတာ့ အသီးေတြနဲ႔ ေခတ္လယ္ပိုင္းက ပြဲေတာ္အရက္ေတြနဲ႔ ျပဳလုပ္တာပါ။ သၾကားနဲ႔ သစ္သီးေျခာက္ေတြက ေစ်းၾကီးလို႔ မဂၤလာပြဲေတြနဲ႔ ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ေတြမွာပဲ ျပဳလုပ္ေလ့ရွိတဲ႔ ကိတ္မ်ိဳးပါ။

Yule Log

The log shape of this cake signifies the Yule Log. In Europe, Yule logs were used to burn in fireplaces throughout Christmas. The cake is made of layered/ rolled sponge cake filled with mousse or buttercream. It is usually decorated with holly leaves, mushrooms and forest creatures.

ဒီကိတ္မုန္႔က သစ္လံုးလို ပံုစံရွိလို႔ Yule Log လို႔ အမည္တြင္ေနတာပါ။ ဥေရာပမွာေတာ့ Yule Log ေတြကို ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ တေလွ်ာက္လံုး ျပဳလုပ္စားသံုးၾကတာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဒီကိတ္မုန္႔မွာ မလိုင္မုန္႔ခ်ိဳ ဒါမွမဟုတ္ ေထာပတ္ခရင္မ္ ေတြထည္႔ျပီး အထပ္လိုက္လိပ္ထားတာပါ။ ေဟာ္လီရြက္၊ မႈိ နဲ႔ သစ္ေတာပံုစံငယ္ေလးေတြနဲ႔ အလွဆင္ထားတဲ႔ ကိတ္မုန္႔မ်ိဳးလည္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

Chestnuts

Did you start humming “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” when you hear the word“Chestnuts?” They become a Christmas icon despite note being a luxury food. The humble nature of Chestnuts itself is the reason why they are one of the special Christmas Food.

သစ္အယ္သီး

“Chestnuts” လို႔ ၾကားလိုက္တာနဲ႔ “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” ဆိုျပီး သီခ်င္းညည္းဖူးလား။ ေစ်းမၾကီးေပမယ့္ ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ရဲ႕ အမွတ္အသားတစ္ခုျဖစ္လာပါတယ္။ သစ္အယ္သီးရဲ႕ ရိုးရွင္းတဲ႔သဘာ၀ေၾကာင့္ပဲ ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ရဲ႕ စားစရာေတြထဲမွာ ပါ၀င္လာခဲ႔တာျဖစ္ပါလိမ့္မယ္။

Eggnog

This delicious drink of milk and wine-based punch is dated based as early as 17th century. Since nogs were made for special occasions, they were a natural choice for Christmas dinners to toast for good health.

ႏြားနို႔နဲ႔ ၀ိုင္ပါတဲ႔ အရသာရွိလြန္းတဲ႔ Eggnog ကေတာ့ (၁၇) ရာစုေလာက္ကတည္းကစခဲ႔တယ္လို႔ ဆိုရမွာပါ။ Nog ေတြကို ပြဲေတာ္ၾကီးေတြမွာပဲ ေသာက္ေလ့ရွိတာျဖစ္လို႔ခရစၥမတ္ညစာ အတြက္လည္း တြဲဖက္ေသာက္စရာအေနနဲ႔ သံုးေဆာင္ေနၾကတာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

Mince pies

Eating mince pies on Christmas Day was banned by Oliver Cromwell in 17th century and it has yet to be abolished. So mince pies are technically still illegal today.The recipe of mince pies was brought back by the Crusaders from the Middle East. Its ingredients of meats, fruits and spices were deemed too excessive and hence the ban.

ခရစၥမတ္ပြဲေတာ္ေန႔မွာ Mince Pies ေတြ စားသံုးျခင္းကို (၁၇) ရာစုႏွစ္ မွာ Oliver Cromwell က တားျမစ္ခ်က္ ထုတ္ခဲ႔လို႔ ေပ်ာက္ကြယ္လုနီးပါး ျဖစ္ခဲ႔ပါတယ္။ ဒါေၾကာင့္မို႔လို႔ ဒီေန႔ေခတ္အခ်ိန္မွာ တရားမ၀င္မုန္႔ ျဖစ္ခဲ႔ရတာပါ။ Mince Pies ေတြကို အေရွ႕အလယ္ပိုင္းေဒသက ကရူးဆိုက္ တိုက္ပြဲ၀င္သူေတြက ျပန္လည္စားသံုးခဲ႔ၾကပါတယ္။ ဒီမုန္႔ထဲမွာပါတဲ႔ အသား ၊ သစ္သီးနဲ႔အေမႊးအၾကိဳင္ေတြက မ်ားျပားလြန္းလို႔ တားျမစ္ခ်က္ထုတ္ခဲ႔တာပဲ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။
