The future of award shows

The future of award shows

As the Covid situation has not died down, schedules are still conflicting but the shows must go on. The VMAs were conducted over last weekend and despite many heartbreaks from last Friday, there were many happy memories made.

The 2020s MTV VMAs went “live” on Sunday night but as we all know the Covid-19 situation caused media people to get creative. The usual huge live ceremony was converted into a green screen performance or a prerecorded footages instead. As everything is prefilmed, of course that would mean that the artists themselves knew that they have received the awards and made an acceptance speeches.

This got us thinking, is this the new normal of award ceremonies and concerts? The faceless CGI crowds will freak us out a bit but thinking back, the green screens and outdoor shoots with zero audience is the best way that they will be able to observe social distancing and prevent the spread of Covid-19. Even Lady Gaga’s and Ariana Grande’s performance involved them masking to prevent any spread. Many of the artists accounted that they had to do many tests just to make sure that there are zero to little transmission going on. So what do you think? Is half covered faces and green screen performances our new normal?
