With almost all sporting events canceled since March, many fans were left wondering when their favorite teams would be back in action. Professional racecar drivers, however, found a temporary solution. They teamed up with iRacing, a popular online racing simulator, to stage a series of virtual races and competitions, featuring some of NASCAR, Indy, and Formula 1’s biggest stars.
Many of the races were broadcast on television, drawing in millions of viewers and leading to a 50% increase in iRacing subscriptions. The lockdown has to lead to a boom in esports around the world, with many professional athletes taking part. Some sporting events, including NASCAR, have since resumed without fans in attendance.
