The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Based on the children book, the tale of Dorothy and her gang of misfits have spun off many movies and adaptations. However, the 1939 musical movie, starring Judy Garland, was best known for the songs and the use of Technicolor, which was revolutionary at that time.
Stand out Song: “Over the Rainbow”
Widely known as “Somewhere over the rainbow” won Academy Award for Best Original Song and ranked Number one in Recording Industry Association of America.

If you haven’t seen this iconic movie, you are definitely missing out. The tale of spirited governess Maria and the Von Trapp family in Austrian countryside capture many of our hearts and it is one of the iconic musical films to date.

“Doe: a deer, a female deer!”
Even if you haven’t seen the movie, you would have sung along to this song during your childhood. In the film, the song is used by the main character Maria to teach the children to sing for the first time.

The tale of magical nanny and the two children she is looking after was so well-loved and critically acclaimed. It was nominated for 13 Oscars and won 5. Julie Andrews won the Best Actress for her role. A little FYI, she also played Maria in the above “The Sound of Music”
Stand out Song: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
While “Chim Chim Cher-ee” won an Oscar for Best Original Song, it’s “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” that got our tongue twisted and excited.

The romance between the star crossed lovers, Satine and Christian, by Director Baz Luhrmann had polarizing reviews when it was released. Set in early 19th century Paris, the songs were from modern artists such as Nirvana and Elton John.
Stand out Song: Come What May
Most well-known song from this movie will be “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, Pink. However, it was “Come what may” where the lovers revealed their forbidden love for each other that captures many hearts.

It is considered a modern musical and almost won the Oscar for Best Movie when the presenter misread the winner’s name. It follows the tale of aspiring actress and Jazz musician as they struggled for fame in LA.
Stand out Song: Epilogue
La La Land won Best Original Song Oscar for “City of Stars” but it was “Epilogue” that made this LUSH writer sat through a flight with a sobbing girl next seat.

Chicago (2002)
This musical about fame, crime, sex and revenge won Oscar for best movie in 2002. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger payed rivals who are fighting for spotlight while being in jail for murder.
Stand out Song: Cell Block Tango
It is a song-and-dance number with female criminals singing about how they ended up in Jail. Sexy and ruthless, you might even end up thinking these lady killers might be right.
