For Spring/Summer 2027, Alexander McQueen returned to the official London Fashion Week schedule for the first time since February 2001. More than a change of location, the return marked a significant moment for the British fashion house, bringing its contemporary creative direction back to the city so deeply embedded in its identity.

Under the creative direction of Seán McGirr, the collection was presented on 20 September 2026 at the Undercroft of Lincoln’s Inn Chapel, a historic seventeenth-century space in London. Its Gothic architecture, stone flooring and atmospheric surroundings provided a distinctive setting for a collection exploring the contrasts between classical elegance and contemporary rebellion.

For McGirr, London represents more than the geographical origins of the house. Its cultural diversity, unconventional attitudes and creative contradictions became central elements of the Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Rather than simply revisiting the past, he explored how the city’s contrasting identities could inform a contemporary interpretation of McQueen.

Between Sacred Beauty and Underground Culture

The central narrative of the SS27 collection emerged from the meeting of two seemingly opposing worlds: Renaissance art and London’s underground rave culture.

McGirr drew inspiration from The Baptism of Christ, the Renaissance painting by Piero della Francesca, which had fascinated him during his early years in London. This reference to classical art informed the collection’s more sculptural and contemplative elements, while the city’s nightlife introduced a contrasting sense of movement, energy and experimentation.

The resulting collection explored the relationship between restraint and excess, elegance and disruption, and tradition and modernity.

These contrasts were particularly visible in the runway presentation. Traditional silhouettes were interrupted by unconventional proportions, while refined eveningwear was transformed through unexpected materials and accessories. The collection moved between the formal language of British tailoring and the expressive visual identity of London’s club culture.

Rather than treating these influences as separate aesthetics, McGirr brought them together to explore the creative possibilities of their differences.

 

The Architecture of British Tailoring

Tailoring remained one of the defining elements of Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Drawing on British sartorial traditions, McGirr presented sharply structured suits, sculptural shoulders and elongated silhouettes that reflected the house’s longstanding relationship with craftsmanship and construction.

The collection also featured a collaboration with Huntsman, the historic Savile Row tailoring house associated with McQueen’s own tailoring heritage. The partnership brought traditional British tailoring techniques into conversation with McGirr’s contemporary design language.

Among the collection’s most distinctive details were jackets with sculpted shoulders resembling folded angel wings. These architectural forms introduced a dramatic dimension to otherwise precise tailoring, creating a visual relationship between classical elegance and theatrical expression.

The silhouettes also recalled the rebellious spirit of British tailoring, particularly the unconventional proportions associated with the work of Tommy Nutter. By revisiting these references, McGirr explored the relationship between Savile Row’s formal traditions and London’s history of challenging established dress codes.

The result was tailoring that retained its structural precision while embracing a more experimental silhouette.

 

Gothic Romance and the Language of the Night

Gothic aesthetics have long been associated with Alexander McQueen’s visual identity. For SS27, McGirr approached this heritage through a combination of dark romanticism, sculptural construction and unexpected decorative elements.

Eveningwear played an important role in the collection. Fluid satin gowns, corseted silhouettes and sculptural dresses introduced a sense of theatrical elegance, while metallic embellishments and unconventional cut-outs challenged the traditional expectations of formal dressing.

Some garments featured metallic leaves scattered across their surfaces, creating intricate contrasts between texture, light and movement. A particularly striking element was a dress constructed from individually hand-embroidered metal skulls, bringing together craftsmanship and the darker visual language historically associated with McQueen.

The collection also explored transparency and exposure through mesh, perforated leather and open-back corsetry. These elements introduced a more provocative dimension to the garments, reinforcing the tension between refinement and rebellion.

Rather than relying exclusively on dark colours, McGirr incorporated contrasting shades and reflective surfaces to evoke the visual intensity of London’s nightlife. The interplay of light, texture and movement gave the collection a distinctly nocturnal atmosphere.

 

Shaun Leane and the Return of Sculptural Accessories

Accessories played a significant role in establishing the collection’s visual identity. McGirr reunited with Shaun Leane, the jewellery designer whose long-standing creative relationship with Alexander McQueen helped shape some of the house’s most recognisable runway moments.

For SS27, their collaboration introduced sculptural harnesses and metallic accessories that complemented the collection’s structured silhouettes.

The harnesses extended beyond conventional accessories, becoming an integral part of the garments’ construction and visual composition. Their presence introduced an industrial quality to the more delicate eveningwear, creating a dialogue between the softness of satin and the rigidity of metal.

Footwear also contributed to the collection’s distinctive character. Platform heels and sculptural designs reflected the influence of London’s underground fashion scene, while dramatic hairstyles featuring horn-like forms reinforced the collection’s theatrical aesthetic.

Together, these elements demonstrated how accessories, beauty and clothing could function as interconnected components of a broader creative narrative.

 

London Rave Culture Meets Luxury Fashion

 

 

One of the most distinctive aspects of the collection was its engagement with London’s underground culture. References to rave fashion, club dressing and the city’s unconventional creative communities informed several of the collection’s silhouettes and styling choices.

Sporty knitted shorts, mesh garments, perforated leather and unexpected combinations of tailoring and clubwear introduced a more relaxed, rebellious dimension to the runway.

The influence of Cyberdog, the well-known alternative fashion and music store in Camden, was also reflected in the collection’s futuristic styling and experimental approach to dressing.

These references offered a contrast to the traditional elegance of British tailoring. However, rather than presenting rave culture as an isolated influence, McGirr incorporated its visual language into the broader vocabulary of the house.

The result was a collection in which the formality of luxury fashion encountered the spontaneity of nightlife. Tailored garments met unconventional accessories, while elegant eveningwear adopted details associated with underground club culture.

This combination reflected a distinctly London sensibility, where different cultural identities frequently coexist and influence one another.

 

Seán McGirr’s Contemporary Interpretation of McQueen

 

Since taking over as creative director in 2023, Seán McGirr has been developing his interpretation of Alexander McQueen’s established design codes. The SS27 collection represents a further exploration of the relationship between the house’s historical identity and his own creative perspective.

The collection revisited familiar McQueen themes, including dramatic tailoring, sculptural construction, theatrical presentation and the tension between beauty and darkness. However, its references to London’s contemporary culture also introduced a more personal dimension to the creative direction.

McGirr’s approach was not simply to reproduce archival silhouettes or revisit familiar runway references. Instead, he explored how the house’s established aesthetic could engage with a different cultural context.

The combination of Huntsman’s traditional tailoring, Shaun Leane’s sculptural accessories, Renaissance art and rave culture created a collection shaped by several distinct creative influences.

Its presentation in London further reinforced this connection between heritage and contemporary expression.

 

A New Chapter in McQueen’s London Story

 

Alexander McQueen’s return to London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2027 brought the house back to the city associated with its origins. The presentation at Lincoln’s Inn Chapel provided a setting in which architecture, fashion and cultural references became part of a single creative narrative.

For Seán McGirr, the collection offered an opportunity to explore the contradictions that define London: classical and unconventional, disciplined and rebellious, elegant and experimental.

Through structured British tailoring, sculptural accessories, Gothic references and underground influences, SS27 presented a contemporary interpretation of the house’s distinctive aesthetic.

The collection also raised a broader question about the relationship between fashion heritage and creative evolution. How can a fashion house preserve the visual identity that established its reputation while allowing a new creative voice to emerge?

McGirr’s London presentation approached that question through the city’s own cultural contrasts, bringing together elements that might otherwise appear incompatible.

From the precision of Savile Row to the expressive energy of London’s nightlife, Alexander McQueen SS27 explored the possibilities of bringing tradition and experimentation into the same creative space.

As the house continues its journey under McGirr’s direction, its return to London marks another chapter in the evolving relationship between Alexander McQueen, British fashion and the city’s enduring creative spirit.
