Love melody of a big day Da, a, da dum …… or a traditional marching music, whatever it it played, this is the time when the two people swear their vows to walk the life together as one in front of the audiences, their families, their friends and themselves. Music is a major part of wedding day. From the walk down to the aisle to the first dance, music is glue that brings an event together and fills a venue with warmth, that is of course, depend on the musical intention, selection of material, musicians and instruments used. When it comes to music for weddings, obviously, different cultures will have different wedding music trends and traditions, yet, in Myanmar the ceremony usually starts with the particular sound that the Brahmin blows a conch shell as a commencement.
Similar to the western weddings, there will be a Brahim, the master of ceremony, who will consecrate the marriage, after having recited a special written stanza on the bridal families and shower poetic praises on the bride and groom and then end-up with blessings for the couple t have lifelong union and prosperity. And there the time comes, the singers from the band will begin to sing the classical auspicious song, praising the occasion and the participants. By the time the western cultures blended, the traditional meets modern in the Burmese wedding customs and music has been changed by the trends.
In the present, you probably hear the popular studio hit love songs whilst some still keep the tradition. In most of the Myanmar weddings, they usually separate the ceremony in two sections, the traditional wedding in the morning and dinner party in the evening. Though wedding traditions have changed a lot in history, the purpose of traditions haven’t changed. The event is meant to celebrate and bring family and friends together. In church weddings, an organ or a solo pianist will play the most popular classic music like, Canon in D major or Wedding March which has been featured in many movies or ceremonies but still the best match for weddings, still the favorite and always the right choice. In the evening party, Bruno Mars’ Marry You or Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years or Nwe Yee Win’s D A Chain Ka Sa or Burmese popular duet song, Lite Phat Tat Bawa will be played in different versions. But in Myanmar, though the dinner concept is delivered from western culture, there is no first dance time for bride and groom, only the speech or the performance by the hired singer or band. Nevertheless the different the wedding music is, the purpose, the joy, the love shared on that day will always be memorable for the lifetime.
