At Dior, Jonathan Anderson looks at the house”s historical designs through a contemporary perspective. Rather than simply bringing archival pieces back, he studies how they are constructed and explores how their shapes, proportions and details can take on new forms ‘ from a couture gown inspiring a handbag to the volume of a dress reinterpreted in menswear.
What makes Anderson”s approach interesting is his attention to the details behind a garment: the shape of a panel, the way a pleat falls, or how a narrow waist balances a fuller skirt. These small design decisions become starting points for new interpretations.
Anderson founded JW Anderson in 2008 and led Loewe for more than a decade. In June 2025, he was appointed Creative Director of Dior”s men”s, women”s and haute couture collections. His first Dior runway presentation was Men”s Summer 2026.
01. Reading the Garment, Not Just the Image
When Anderson arrived at Dior, he asked to see six looks from each of the house”s previous designers. During an archive tour, he explained how examining the Bar jacket on its own made its cut and shape easier to understand.
The original Bar suit is defined by its narrow waist and carefully shaped hip line. Anderson looks closely at these details, considering what can evolve while preserving the characteristics that make the design instantly recognisable.
02 When a Dress Becomes a Bag
The Cigale bag makes this idea easy to see. Christian Dior’s 1952 La Cigale gown had a fitted top and a skirt that stood out at the hips. The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains how carefully shaped pattern pieces created that volume. Anderson focused on the dress’s front panel during his Vogue archive visit.
The bag uses folded leather panels to echo the shape of the gown. But the change is not just about appearance: a bag has to hold its shape, open and close, and be carried. Anderson takes an idea from the construction of a dress and makes it work in a different product.

The reference to La Cigale gives the bag a connection to Dior’s history, while its design establishes an identity of its own.
03 When Couture Changes Context
The Bar jacket had already appeared in Dior menswear before Anderson, including under Kim Jones. So the important detail is how Anderson styled it. His first Dior Men”s Summer 2026 look paired a Bar jacket in Irish Donegal tweed with wide white cargo Bermuda shorts.

The shorts were inspired by the volume of Christian Dior”s 1948 Delft dress.According to Dior, the pleated back uses seven metres of fabric, while the cargo pockets bring a practical detail into the design.Together, the fitted jacket and wide shorts bring couture shapes into a modern men”s look.
What makes this pairing interesting is the change in use. Anderson takes the volume of a couture dress and works it into men”s shorts. The original inspiration is still there, but the result feels like a different kind of garment.
04 Taking the Weight Out of Tailoring
For Summer 2027, Anderson focused on lighter materials. One runway look paired a light pinstriped jacket with a short, layered ivory skirt. The contrast between a shaped jacket and a fuller skirt still recalled Dior, but the outfit looked softer and moved more freely.
The collection also used sheer suits, chiffon, organza and lace. Instead of relying on heavy fabric to keep their shape, some pieces moved softly with the body. Dior described the collection as a study of lightness.

Across these examples, Anderson returns to the same starting point: understanding what makes a Dior design distinctive and exploring how it can work in a different context. A couture gown inspires a handbag, the volume of a historic dress becomes part of menswear, and traditional tailoring takes on a lighter form.
His approach is not simply about bringing archival designs back onto the runway. It is about recognising the ideas behind them and finding ways to use those ideas today. Through these reinterpretations, Dior’s history remains part of the conversation while its designs continue to evolve.
